Have you ever looked up and realised you're running through life in survival mode?
You're ticking the boxes, doing all the things, showing up where you're needed and yet somewhere along the line, you got lost in the hustle. Your patience is short. Your body is tired. Your joy feels like a memory.
I know that feeling. It's called burnout. And it often creeps up on us slowly, not because we're weak or failing, but because we've been so busy meeting responsibilities that we stopped paying attention to our capacity.
The truth is, we all have a limit. Some of us can carry more than others, but every person has a boundary where responsibility outweighs capacity. And when that line gets crossed again and again, we begin to live in the red zone. We say yes when we should say no. We push past warning signs. We stop investing in what matters: our health, our peace, our faith, our relationships.
Because here's the thing: work matters, but it's not everything.
The most valuable things in our lives can't be bought. And if we're not careful, we can sacrifice them on the altar of busyness.
A Tool That's Helping Me Reconnect
Recently, I started a powerful series at church that introduced the idea of the 4 Tanks. It was so impactful that I knew I needed to share it with you.
Each of us has four core areas that need fuelling:
- Physical
- Emotional
- Mental
- Spiritual
Think of each tank like a cylinder with two pipes - one bringing life in (inlet) and one releasing life out (outlet). In a healthy rhythm, we're being fuelled and pouring out. But what happens when we're constantly giving and never receiving?
We run dry.
We live exhausted.
We snap at the people we love.
We feel distant from God.
We lose ourselves.
Your Challenge: The Tank Check-In
I would like to invite you to conduct a gentle self-assessment today. No guilt. No pressure. Just an honest moment to pause and reflect:
Where are your tanks right now?
- Burnt out (empty)?
- Danger zone (running low)?
- Balanced (half-full)?
- Fuelled (topped up and thriving)?
What fills you in each area?
- Physical: Is it rest, walks, nourishing food?
- Emotional: Is it connection, quality time, creative expression?
- Mental: Is it reading, learning, switching off?
- Spiritual: Is it prayer, worship, journaling, being in nature?
What's draining you?
Start noticing where your energy goes. Are you saying yes out of guilt? Are you caught in comparison? Are you living for others' approval?
You Were Made for More Than Just Getting Through the Day.
I believe God created us to live fully, not frantically. He didn't design us for burnout - He designed us for life to the full, but we can't get there if we're always running on empty. Living in awareness of these different "energy tanks" is something I'm walking through myself, so you're not alone.
Take a few minutes today to pause, reflect, and reset.
Even one slight shift, one boundary, one intentional pause, and one moment of prayer can begin to refill what has been depleted.
You are worth that pause - your well-being matters.
Also, remember, your fullness is not just for you - it ripples out to your family, your community, and the people you're called to serve.
If this resonated with you and you're ready to take a gentle next step,
I've created a free guide to help you bring more calm into your everyday life - with practical tools to help you reflect, reset, and refill your tanks.

You don't have to stay in survival mode.
There is a way back to calm, and it starts with one intentional pause.
