Have you ever wondered why you feel exhausted, even when you’ve technically had enough sleep, or why small things feel overwhelming, like you’re always one step away from snapping, crying, or shutting down?
You might not be ‘too emotional’ or ‘not coping’, your nervous system may simply be running in overdrive.
In today's fast-paced world, many women live with a constantly activated nervous system without even realising it. And over time, it takes a toll, physically, emotionally, mentally, relationally. Let’s explore what’s really happening and some simple ways to begin supporting yourself.
Your Nervous System: The Control Centre You Rarely Think About
Your nervous system is designed to keep you safe. When you sense a threat (big or small), your body reacts automatically:
- Your heart rate increases.
- Your muscles tense.
- Your breathing changes.
- Stress hormones like cortisol flood your system.
This is called your fight-or-flight response and it’s incredibly useful if you’re facing real danger, but the problem is: many of us are living in a near-constant state of low-level threat.
Deadlines. Family pressures. Financial worries. Health concerns. Relationship strain.
Your body doesn’t always know the difference between a true emergency and a busy week filled with micro-stressors.
Signs Your Nervous System Might Be "Stuck On":
- Struggling to relax or truly switch off
- Racing thoughts or rumination
- Sleep difficulties (even when tired)
- Digestive issues or tension headaches
- Irritability or emotional sensitivity
- Feeling easily overwhelmed by small tasks
- Numbness, disconnection or "shutting down" emotionally
If you nodded to several of these, you’re not alone.
Many women I work with describe this as “functioning, but not thriving.”
How Chronic Activation Impacts Your Life:
Over time, an overactive nervous system can:
- Drain your energy
- Affect your immune system
- Impact hormones and digestion
- Strain relationships (snapping at loved ones, withdrawing)
- Contribute to anxiety, burnout, and even depression
It’s not just “in your head”, your whole system feels it.
Gentle Ways to Support Your Nervous System
The good news? Small, simple changes can begin to bring relief.
Here are a few grounding tools I often share with clients:
1️⃣ Slow your breath
Even 3-5 minutes of slow, intentional breathing signals safety to your body.
2️⃣ Ground your senses
Notice 5 things you can see, 4 you can touch, 3 you can hear, 2 you can smell, 1 you can taste.
3️⃣ Body movement
Gentle walks, stretching or light movement help release stored tension.
4️⃣ Create safety cues
Soothing music, warm tea, weighted blankets, calming scents - your body responds to small signals of safety.
5️⃣ Limit stimulants
Reduce caffeine, screen time, and news intake where possible.
You Don’t Have To Navigate This Alone
If this sounds familiar, please know, your body is not broken.
You’ve simply been carrying too much, for too long.
Counselling can be a safe space to gently unpack what your body has been holding, and learn practical ways to bring regulation back into your daily life.
If you’re ready for support, I’d love to walk with you on this journey.
